While in high school, I met a hearing friend who was interested in DHH issues, and she was determined enough to go on and learn American sign language, and eventually she got her DHH teaching credential.
After we both graduated from high school, we parted ways and I lost touch with her.
Well recently I signed up with Facebook, and she was able to get back in touch with me immediately. Such is the power of computer technology.
She now is a professor at Gallaudet University, and I’m extremely proud of what she has accomplished.
Through Facebook, I am able to see her real-time current photos and comments about her journey through Saudi Arabia. She is able to tell me her impressions about the DHH culture there. How wonderful that this is possible for me to see her do this, via computer technology. I could talk to her via VP technology, but her current story via FB is good enough for me.
We DHH people are indeed fortunate to have all kinds of technology available to us these days, such as cochlear implants, digital hearing aids, computers, VP technology and many others.
Amy, hope you’re having a great time in Saudi Arabia.
